Exploring Race in Society

Essays that provide a deeper understanding of how current issues stem from actions and policies of the past.

Designed for high school and undergraduate students, Exploring Race in Society contains proprietary essays that provide today’s students with a deeper understanding of how current issues stem from actions and policies of the past.

Each topic includes an overview article and three essays suggesting potential solutions. Solutions essays are written by a diverse group of writers representing the fields of academia, journalism, medicine and other disciplines working to address issues related to race.

Topics include: Affirmative Action, Black Lives Matter Movement, Digital Divide, Food Insecurity, Police Use of Force, Wealth Gap and more.

Enciclopedia Estudiantil Hallazgos es la herramienta de referencia en español para principiantes. Busque por palabra clave o busque artículos. Enciclopedia Estudiantil Hallazgos is the beginner's Spanish language reference tool.  Search by keyword or browse for articles.  Every article provides a bilingual feature which allows you to switch between Spanish and English content.  Periodicos del Mundo Hispanico features web links to newspapers from Spanish-speaking countries around the world.  The Diccionario Visual (or Visual Dictionary) helps you clarify word meanings and grasp complex visual topics in Spanish and English.  Mundo de Animales (World of Animals) lets you compare animals side by side and view an extensive collection of animal facts, videos, images, and web links.

OverDrive/Libby

OverDrive/Libby is a collection of e-books, digital audiobooks, and digital magazines offered by the library. E-books, audiobooks, and magazines can be downloaded to your computer, tablet, (including Kindle), or mobile device for offline reading or listening.

Getting Started

All you need to get started is your Charlotte Mecklenburg Library card number or ONE Access account number.  

 

Access the Collection

  • Click the "Access Now" button

  • Libby is OverDrive's app, designed to get you reading as quickly and seamlessly as possible.  Learn more about Libby and find help here.
  • Kindle Fire users will download the Libby app in the Amazon app store.

Borrowing

  • You can have a maximum of 20 items checked to you out at any given time.  For example, if three items are returned, you can check out three more to get back to 20.  This limit is not effected by the day of the month.  Digital magazine checkouts do not count towards your limit.

  • The default lending period for ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines is two weeks.  The settings menu will let you customize your lending period to 7 days, 14 days, or 21 days.  

If items are check out, place a hold.  Customers are allowed 10 holds on their account at any given time.  You will be contacted by email when your item is available to check out.  You'll see an option to renew a title on your Loans page three days before it expires, as long as there are no holds.  If the title has holds, you can request it again.

Return items when you are finished or they will be automatically returned when they are due so you never accumulate late fees!

Kanopy Kids

Stream a selection of educational and enriching videos on Kanopy Kids with developmentally appropriate, age-based ratings from Common Sense Media, as well as additional parental controls. Kanopy Kids categories include TV Series, Learning Languages, Animated Storybooks, Anime Favorites, Classic Films and Movies for the Whole Family. Kanopy Kids has unlimited views.

Getting started:

If you are a first time user, create a Kanopy account by clicking the "Sign Up" button. When creating your account, enter your name, email address and select a password.  An email will be sent to you with a verification link. Click on the link sent in the email and it will ask you to select your Library (Charlotte Mecklenburg Library) and enter your Charlotte Mecklenburg Library barcode and PIN number.

Access the Collection

  • Click the "Access Now" button
  • Enter through the main Kanopy site, and click on "Kids" in the upper right corner. Click again to toggle out of Kids Mode and return to the main Kanopy collection.
  • Download the Kanopy app for Android, Apple, and Amazon Fire tablets.
  • Kanopy can be streamed on your desktop computer, tablets, smartphones, and TV apps.

Kanopy Kids has unlimited plays!  New videos are added each month.

Parents can set a four-digit pin to prevent kids from viewing a title that has not been approved for viewing in Kanopy Kids.  Learn more here.

Tumblebook Library

TumbleBook Library is a collection of animated, talking picture books. TumbleBook Library can be read by you or read to you! Our collection includes storybooks, books in French and Spanish for language learning, read-along books, non-fiction books, puzzles and games, math stories and graphic novels.

Getting Started

Click the "Access Now" button below.  Our subscription doesn't allow use of the Tumblebook Library app.  However, you can enjoy Tumblebook Library from your browser in your mobile device or tablet.  Tumblebooks needs an internet connection in order to work.
 
 
Borrowing
Books are read to you instantly in the TumbeBook reader.  There is no limit to what you can view.
 
 
Tips
Tumblebook Library is best enjoyed in the Chrome browser.  Some  of the books will not work with Microsoft browsers.

World Book Encyclopedia

Dynamic and interactive online encyclopedia for young students to adults. Includes Spanish version, as well as access to e-books for homework help and research projects, grades K-12.

What do you have access to?
 

World Book Kids: Search or Browse for articles on anything from sharks to art & architecture to Greek mythology and more.  Pictures, videos, maps, illustrations, and sounds can be found on the left side of most articles.  WB Kids also includes access to science projects, dictionaries, games, and maps.
 

World Book Student is for elementary and middle school students.  Student includes all the articles from the print versions of the World Book Encyclopedias.  Research tools include My Research to save your searching results, Citation Builder to cite your research, Maps and Atlas, and a Browse by Subject tool.  News and current events are broken down in Current Events: Behind the Headlines.  Check out the Biography Center for thousands of biographies on your favorite scientist, celebrity, and more.  Featured Media highlights interesting videos that have been recently added to World Book Student.

World Book e-books include highly illustrated, engaging titles that span all curriculum areas and reading levels. Read online or download titles to the e-books app.
 

World Book Timelines provides access to hundreds of customizable, interactive timelines of important events throughout history or span the life of historical public figures.  Tap on the featured timeline or browse the collection of World Book pre-built timelines.  You can also create your own timeline from scratch, adding events, descriptions, and media.
 

World Book Early Learning is a resource for preschoolers and children in early elementary grades.  Early Learning helps with reading comprehension by reading aloud buttons, instructions, subtitles, and titles when they are “moused over” or touched.  Also included are games, stories, and activities.
