Stories from the Library’s Summer Break: Read, Learn, Explore

July 8, 2021

Each summer Charlotte Mecklenburg Library encourages people of all ages to participate in our summer learning program, Summer Break. There are lots of reasons why! We think one of the best parts of Summer Break is hearing from participants about all the wonderful, little, powerful, or unexpected ways that the program has impacted their lives. From encouraging participants to further explore the city, to motivating students to read all summer long, we’ve compiled some notable stories. Keep reading for inspiration.

Summer Break Helps People of All Ages Discover Love of Reading

One of the things customers share most frequently is how Summer Break fosters a love of reading. One Summer Break completer was so excited that his prize was a book that he could keep.

Find your next read with us!

We have created new lists for summer 2021 for kids, teens and adults so you can keep your brains active. These recommended reading lists can be found on our website at summerbreak.cmlibrary.org. (After you register for an account or Sign In, select “Recommendations” in the menu on the top right.)

Groups Love Summer Break

A group is an organization such as a camp, school, day care or other organization who will participate in the Summer Break program together and not individually. Participating in Summer Break as a group is a fun way to work together to read 15 hours and participate in engaging activities. If the group completes the challenge, the group receives fun prizes. It’s also a great way to keep track of the amount of reading a group is doing during June 7 to August 14. One CMS teacher says it was easy to sign up and all the assistance she received from staff was quick and helpful.

Has Summer Break Made an Impact on You?

If you have a story, you’d like to share about Summer Break we’d love to hear it!  You can email us at [email protected], fill out the contact us form on our website or tell any staff member next time you visit the library.

hoopla recently updated their audiobook experience for the Android and Apple apps and the hoopla website.  You will see an enhanced interface, now on a single screen.  Features updated includes increased playback speeds, sleep timer options, and a new car

Digital Tips and Tricks: hoopla Audiobook Experience Gets an Update

July 9, 2021

Do you love audiobooks as much as me? I’m a recent audiobook convert and am obsessed with finding great narrators and a juicy tell-all. I especially love books narrated by the author. Hoopla recently gave their audiobook player a facelift. Haven’t checked it out yet? What are you waiting for?

Hoopla is one of the Library’s resources that allows instant access to e-books, comics, audiobooks, music, movies and television – no holds and no waiting! Content can be streamed on computers, tablets, or mobile devices, and can be downloaded to tablets and mobile devices to allow for offline reading or listening any time. New to hoopla?  Check out our Getting Started page.

The audiobook experience has been updated for the Android and Apple apps and the hoopla website. If your mobile device is not showing the new features, you probably just need to install an update. What’s great about the new audiobook experience is all features can be accessed from one screen!

  • Car and Activity Mode is a simplified interface with fewer controls and larger buttons for when you’re on the go.
  • Chapter/Book Timer gives users a simple toggle to switch between viewing the time remaining in either the current chapter or the entire book.
  • Playback Speed options have been increased to up to four times normal playback speed!
  • Bookmark Notes can now be added to any audiobook bookmark, perfect for book clubs or educational listening.
  • Sleep Timer has more options, including an End of Chapter option.

Read more about the new enhancements and watch a short video here. Happy Listening!

While many protests related to other subjects have taken place without many limitations, the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement has been subject to extreme censorship by both police and the media.

Censorship and Black Lives Matter

July 12, 2021

This blog was written as part of Charlotte Mecklenburg Library's Black Lives Matter program initiative. Learn  more about the program and corresponding events here.

During the 20th and 21st centuries, widespread mass protests have become an essential element of displaying civic engagement in America. Topics such as LGBTQ+ rights, animal cruelty and gun control have elicited millions of people to protest. However, on May 25, 2020, the murder of George Floyd at the hands of police officer Derek Chauvin led to the largest protest in the history of the United States. Over 20 million people nationwide gathered to protest police brutality and racial injustice against Black Americans. While many protests related to other subjects have taken place without many limitations, the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement has been subject to extreme censorship by both police and the media.

Even though most BLM protests were peaceful, calls for militarized police were requested on a national level and states went under lockdown in response. Consequently, the usage of pepper spray, tear gas and rubber ammunition further instigated violence. According to the Texas Tribune, during days of protests, police officers used pepper spray and arrested protestors, critically injuring one person and sending others to the hospital. An additional person had been trampled by an officer on horseback. These actions directly contradict the right to peaceful protest indicated by the First Amendment. Under this law, police forces are only allowed to contain individuals if they have witnessed them commit a crime, possess a warrant, or have probable cause. The intense scrutiny under the BLM movement has made it difficult for people to protest peacefully and the police officers that have been deployed on a national level has left protestors unable to use their voices for change.

Nevertheless, censorship comes in more forms than just government control. Last year, Ardrey Kell High School painted the rock in front of the school with symbols of the BLM movement, honoring the victims of police brutality and encouraging students to act. Yet just a week following this gesture, the rock was vandalized and replaced with hate speech. The BLM movement has constantly faced bigotry and the fact that people were so quick to stop others from speaking out illustrates the massive amount of censorship behind Black and POC voices.

This is not the first time the movement has been censored in a school environment. On May 13, 2021, an entire year after George Floyd's death, an Oklahoma School District banned students from wearing a BLM shirt, stating that “politics will not be allowed at school.” According to the National Coalition Against Censorship, students were required to turn their BLM shirt inside out and were prohibited from entering class until they changed their clothes. The school prohibited students from expressing political beliefs, violating the law established in Tinker v. Des Moines which stated that “students’ political speech is protected by the First Amendment”. At another high school in Florida, a yearbook was censored for containing views about BLM and was cited as being “too politically one-sided.” However, this comment seems as though it was only used to silence the editors, as what was posted in the yearbook only detailed the history of the movement and why it was started.

Fortunately, people have been standing up to fight against the censorship and have strengthened the movement in the process. When the rock at Ardrey Kell was vandalized, students organized a repainting session, inviting the entire school to collaborate on making an artistic representation of the BLM movement. Students who oversaw writing the yearbook at the Florida high school distributed a letter maintaining the political integrity of their article and reaching a middle ground to get their book published. In a broader aspect, journalists and protestors have been able to shed light on their experiences protesting and social media apps have been essential for revealing the truth as it is. As the protests continue and people begin to pay more attention to the movement, it is essential to fight back against censorship and show the world what the BLM movement truly represents — fighting racism, police brutality and serving justice to its victims.

The ultimate movie night is a read away

July 29, 2021

Summer is a season for many things - catching up on rest, chasing adventure through local, national or international travel, trying refreshing recipes in the kitchen and so much more. One of our favorite ways to pass the time is to read a good book (or two, or three, or ten…you get the point), and binge a good TV show or movie. If the show or movie is adapted from a book, we try our best to read the book first. Is anyone else this way?

If, like us, you prefer to dive into a book before diving into its corresponding movie, we have the perfect list for you to explore.

The best summer reading and movie nights are ahead. Check out the following titles:

Adult Fiction
The Last Letter from Your Lover by Jojo Moyes

It is 1960. When Jennifer Stirling wakes up in the hospital, she can remember nothing-not the tragic car accident that put her there, not her husband, not even who she is. She feels like a stranger in her own life until she stumbles upon an impassioned letter, signed simply "B", asking her to leave her husband.

Years later, in 2003, a journalist named Ellie discovers the same enigmatic letter in a forgotten file in her newspaper's archives. She becomes obsessed by the story and hopeful that it can resurrect her faltering career. Perhaps if these lovers had a happy ending, she would find one to her own complicated love life, too. Ellie's search will rewrite history and help her see the truth about her own modern romance.

Adult Non-Fiction
The House of Gucci by Sara Gay Forden

On March 27, 1995, Maurizio Gucci, heir to the fabulous fashion dynasty, was slain by an unknown gunman as he approached his Milan office. In 1998, his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani Martinelli--nicknamed "The Black Widow" by the press--was sentenced to 29 years in prison, for arranging his murder.

Did Patrizia murder her ex-husband because his spending was wildly out of control? Did she do it because her glamorous ex was preparing to marry his mistress, Paola Franchi? Or is there a possibility she didn't do it at all?

The Gucci story is one of glitz, glamour, intrigue, the rise, near fall and subsequent resurgence of a fashion dynasty. Beautifully written, impeccably researched, and widely acclaimed, The House of Gucci will captivate readers with its page-turning account of high fashion, high finance, and heart-rending personal tragedy

Teen
Monster by Walter Dean Myers

Sixteen-year-old Steve Harmon is on trial for murder. A Harlem drugstore owner was shot and killed in his store, and the word is that Steve served as the lookout.

Guilty or innocent, Steve becomes a pawn in the hands of "the system," cluttered with cynical authority figures and unscrupulous inmates, who will turn in anyone to shorten their own sentences. For the first time, Steve is forced to think about who he is as he faces prison, where he may spend all the tomorrows of his life.

As a way of coping with the horrific events that entangle him, Steve, an amateur filmmaker, decides to transcribe his trial into a script, just like in the movies. He writes it all down, scene by scene, the story of how his whole life was turned around in an instant. But, despite his efforts, reality is blurred and his vision obscured until he can no longer tell who he is or what is the truth. This compelling novel is Walter Dean Myers's writing at its best.

Children
Hair Love by Matthew A. Cherry

Zuri’s hair has a mind of its own. It kinks, coils, and curls every which way. Zuri knows it’s beautiful. When mommy does Zuri’s hair, she feels like a superhero. But when mommy is away, it’s up to daddy to step in! And even though daddy has a lot to learn, he LOVES his Zuri. And he’ll do anything to make her—and her hair—happy.

Summer is coming to an end and students across our area are gearing up to return to school! Whether you are sending your child off to school for the first time, preparing for college admissions, or somewhere in between, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is here to support all your student’s back-to-school needs.

Virtual Learning Opportunities

Did you know that the Library provides a multitude of virtual learning programs to enrich your child’s academic and social skills? The calendar is filled weekly with school-age programming you can enjoy from anywhere! After registering, you will receive a Zoom link to participate in the program. If your child can’t make the live programs, you’re invited to participate at your convenience by viewing pre-recorded programs on our Digital Branch. Our specialized content is designed to elevate and extend your student’s learning. Virtual programming is not limited to children in elementary school, it’s available for all age groups. Teens can join in writing groups, book clubs, trivia sessions and gaming sessions such as Dungeons and Dragons. While you get into your back-to-school routine, be sure to join a group and meet new friends.

ONE Access and Curated Lists by Grade Level

Every child in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system can use their student ID number as their Library card number – this is called a ONE Access ID number (the pin number is your child’s month and birthday combined in MMDD format). Yes, you heard that right! It’s called ONE Access, or One Number Equals Access, and it makes it very convenient for your child to place books on hold or check out digital resources. Our Library staff have even created curated lists for students to read by grade level. Check them out here: ElementaryMiddle and High School. Your child’s ONE Access ID number doesn’t just limit them to books. There are many e-resources to utilize such as Tutor.com (up to 10 free, live homework tutoring sessions each week), Transparent Language (learn a new language) and Freegal music (for when your dance party breaks!). The possibilities are endless with free learning resources offered through your Library.

Educational Support

The Library is committed to improving lives and building a stronger community – a lofty goal as evidenced by our commitment to programming and helping your child prepare for their next step beyond high school. Library branches offer one-on-one weekly virtual appointments with teens to discuss how to successfully plan for the future. Library staff members can connect your high schooler with resources to plan for a potential job or college process, including financial aid and scholarship opportunities. One-on-one virtual appointments are available daily for elementary schoolers as well for Reading Buddies, tutoring, and enrichment. Feel back-to-school ready knowing your local Library will support your child’s learning beyond the classroom.

Parent and Teacher Learning Opportunities

Getting ready for the start of a new school year is not limited to children. Parents, caregivers, and teachers can get back-to-school ready by learning something new too. Parent Lunch and Learn programs are available every month virtually for adults to learn something new and connect with other parents. Active Reading programs are offered as well to learn how to read WITH your child, and improve your child’s language, vocabulary and comprehension skills. Build your confidence and meet other caregivers just like you- we're all in this together! If you’re unavailable for live programs, find other resources to kickstart your school year on our Supporting Student Success page.

Every new school year presents new challenges and opportunities. Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is fully equipped and ready to provide you and your school-age child with an opportunity to learn and grow. Take advantage of the opportunities that await you and your children this school year!

Find the whole kit and caboodle at your Library

August 5, 2021

Libraries are more than books.

Libraries are institutions of learning that inspire innovation and creativity. As technology advances around the world, it’s important for libraries to keep pace and serve the needs – and interests – of their communities. So, what, in addition to a stellar collection of books and exciting programs and services, can you find at your Charlotte Mecklenburg Library? If your answer is creative tools and resources to help you express yourself, sharpen or showcase your creative talents, or to launch your next big idea into the market – you’re absolutely right.

Feeling creative? The Library offers the following leading-edge resources (kits):

  1. Cellphone Video Kits – So, you want to make a movie, eh? Our Cellphone Video Kits include everything you need to kick your smartphone videorecording and filmmaking efforts up a notch. Record professional audio, smoothly pan and record video and get the perfect shot. Whether you’re making a vlog, capturing an event or shooting a documentary, these kits contain all the essentials for solo projects and small teams. Learn more here.

  2. Podcast Kits – We can’t confirm whether everyone has a podcast these days, but we can confirm the Library has podcast kits to help you start your own. It’s true. Each podcast kit is housed in a numbered suitcase (think Deal or No Deal), complete with a lending barcode for easy checkout. Inside the sturdy, yet portable suitcase, you will find almost everything you need to podcast; just add a computer for the editing and hosting steps of the process. Oh, and you can borrow the kits for FREE, with your Library card, for up to three weeks! Read more about podcast kits here.

  3. Book Club Kits – The last year and a half has been challenging for all of us – especially for the traditional book club member. Naturally, you were used to meeting with your book club in person, and the COVID-19 pandemic shifted us all online and away from each other physically. Despite the distance, the Library worked to ensure book clubs now meeting in smaller groups or online could still access the most requested titles, adding many new reads to the list. Looking to restart your book club or join one online through the Library? Reserve one of our new Book Club Kits, complete with 10 books, which can be checked out by one member of the group for six weeks (no renewals), today! Welcome to Week 10 of Summer Break!

Summer Break may be Charlotte Mecklenburg Library’s summer learning program, but it wouldn’t be possible without the strong support we receive from our sponsors. We thank these sponsors for their support, which helps the Library improve lives and build a stronger community.

Summer Break got off to a sweet start thanks to Wendy’s! A coupon for a complimentary Jr. Frosty provided the perfect sign-up incentive for participants of all ages. New this year is the sponsor of our Spanish language translations, Norsan Media. Smart Money Moves for Teens: an Interview with Ms. Rachel Gibbs, Founder of Gibbs Financial Fitness

Smart Money Moves for Teens: an Interview with Ms. Rachel Gibbs, Founder of Gibbs Financial Fitness

August 9, 2021

This month the West Boulevard Library Teen Circular met with Ms. Rachel Gibbs. Ms. Gibbs is a financial literacy expert and entrepreneur who graciously uses her expertise to uplift her community. In this interview, Ms. Gibbs spoke openly about the importance of developing strong financial literacy skills and smart money tips that all teens should utilize.

What exactly is a credit score?

A credit score is a number that is assigned to you by a credit bureau. It is based on how well you pay your bills and if you pay them on time.

What is financial literacy, and why is it so important to learn?

Financial literacy is being able to understand how to budget your money. It is important because people need to know how to track their money and know how to spend it.

When do you think teens should start learning about financial literacy?

I started learning about financial literacy when I was seven. As you get older and navigate life, you start learning more about financial literacy. Still, it is never too early to know. Teens today are really at an advantage because there are so many resources available that can teach you how to efficiently budget your money and secure a healthy financial future.

Who taught you all about financial literacy?

My grandfather taught me all about financial literacy. My lessons started when I would roll up coins that my grandfather collected and gave to us. We would separate them, roll them, and take them to the bank to exchange them for money. He taught me how to save during that time because I would save half of what I earned rolling coins. That is where I began to develop my skills. When I went to college, I realized that many people didn’t have strong financial literacy skills so that is where I started to develop the passion for starting my business.

What advice do you have for teenagers right now?

My advice is to get an education. Getting an education is a necessary steppingstone in life and so is developing strong financial literacy skills. No matter what path you take, both are necessary to secure a successful future for yourself.

What is your advice to kids starting a business this summer?

My advice is to pick something you love and do not do it for the money. If you do things that you naturally like to do, the money will start rolling in. Another thing that I would say is to take advantage of the resources that are around you. With all of the technology in the world, teens have so much access to learn new things and if you need help don’t hesitate to reach out to people in your community for support.

What are the three things you would say to a young adult going to college about having good financial health?

The first thing that I would say is to DO NOT take out any refund checks. I did that in college, and that was one of the biggest mistakes I made. Refund checks are nothing but leftover loan money that they have. You are going to have to pay interest on that money. The second thing is to get a part-time job or a work-study program while in school. This will help you save up and pay for tuition. The last thing is to have a reasonable budget. I did not do this and I could have saved a lot more. Developing small healthy money habits while you are young will lead to big rewards later.
