Libby by OverDrive is a collection of e-books, digital audiobooks, and digital magazines offered by the library.  E-books, audiobooks, and magazines can be downloaded to your computer, tablet, (including Kindle), or mobile device for offline reading or listening.  Libby by OverDrive e-book titles can be read online using OverDrive Read and audiobooks can be listened to online using OverDrive Listen.  Mobile and tablet customers, download Libby app for iOS and Android.

Getting Started

All you need to get started is your Charlotte Mecklenburg Library card number or ONE Access account number.  

 

Access the Collection

  • Click the "Access Now" button below

  • Libby is OverDrive's app, designed to get you reading as quickly and seamlessly as possible.  Learn more about Libby and find help here.
  • Kindle users will download the OverDrive app in the Amazon app store.

Borrowing

  • You can have a maximum of 20 items checked to you out at any given time.  For example, if three items are returned, you can check out three more to get back to 20.  This limit is not effected by the day of the month.  Digital magazine checkouts do not count towards your limit.

  • The default lending period for ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines is two weeks.  The settings menu will let you customize your lending period to 7 days, 14 days, or 21 days.  

If items are check out, place a hold.  Customers are allowed 10 holds on their account at any given time.  You will be contacted by email when your item is available to check out.  You'll see an option to renew a title on your Loans page three days before it expires, as long as there are no holds.  If the title has holds, you can request it again.

Return items when you are finished or they will be automatically returned when they are due so you never accumulate late fees!

Troubleshooting

  • Make sure you are still signed in to the Library's Charlotte Business Journal account.  You should see [email protected] in the right top.  If you don't see that, go back to the Library's Research and Learn page, Charlotte Business Journal, and click Access Now. 
     
  • To return to the Home page of Charlotte Business Journal, click on the "Charlotte Business Journal" logo in the left corner.  Do not click the back arrow.
  • Access The Book of Lists and Current Week's edition from the "Your News" section on the right side of the page.  Do not try to access it from the footer.

Newsbank provides library customers with digital access to The Charlotte Observer. Databases can be searched separately as well as together. Articles are searchable by name, keyword or phrase.

Included in our access:

  • Charlotte Observer (Historical access, 1886-1984) is an image database.*   
  • Charlotte Observer, The (NC) is a text database** and provides access from 1985 to the current date. 
  • Charlotte Observer, The (NC) 2018-current is an image database.*  Use this option to view the daily paper.
  • Charlotte Observer: The Blogs (NC) is a text database** that includes all the blogs published by the Charlotte Observer from 2005 to current.
  • Charlotte Observer, The Web Edition Articles (NC) are available from 2007 to current.
  • Charlotte Post, The (NC) content is available from 2006 to current.
  • Charlotte Semi-Weekly Observer (1892-1892).

     * Image database: When you view or select a date, phrase, etc. the results will show an image of the article as it appeared in print.

     ** Text database: A text database provides access to the text of the article, but it does not include images or display that article as it appeared in print.

How to access The Charlotte Observer content with your library card:

  • Use the ACCESS NOW link below.  You will be prompted to enter your library card or ONE Access account number.
  • Choose which database you want to search.  Options are on the left side of the page under Shortcuts.  Click “Charlotte Post” or “Charlotte Observer Historical and Current”.
  • If you select “Charlotte Observer Historical and Current” you can search both databases using the search box at the top of the page.  If you want to search a specific year, review the options listed under "Source" and click the link to the Charlotte Observer that contains the year you would like to search.
  • Articles can be printed, saved as PDF or emailed.

Celebrate International Games Month with Charlotte Mecklenburg Library!

Happy International Games Month (IGM)!

 

IGM is an initiative run by volunteers around the world to reconnect communities through their libraries around the educational, recreational, and social value of all types of games – and CML has done a LOT of gaming so far this November!

 

This month, we’ve offered gaming programs for all ages and all types of gamers: we’ve had Minute to Win It games at North County Regional, a Puzzle Swap at SouthPark, Chess at South County Regional, the Haunted Havoc Gaming Tournament at West Boulevard, Dewey and Dragons at TONS of branches, and SO much more! A HUGE thanks to those who have picked up a controller or puzzle piece, a new game or an old favorite.

 

If you think you may have missed out on a great gaming program, don’t worry – we have plenty of programs planned for the second half of the month, too. Check out After Hours Board Games at Founders Hall, Among Us at South Boulevard, Giant Board Games at Matthews, Overcooked at Pineville, Miniature Painting at Allegra Westbrooks, Cozy Gaming Arts & Crafts at ImaginOn, or Board Game Night with community partner Potions & Pixels at University City. You can even browse through our program catalog for something that catches your eye!
