National African American Read-In Celebration

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library has postponed the African American Read-In until 2026. This decision was based on a transition within our programming staff and a shortened planning period.  We strongly believe it is important to provide a cultural program that makes our community proud. Scheduling the program for a later date will allow us to successfully plan and facilitate the Read In.

What is the National African American Read-In?

The National African American Read-In (AARI) is a groundbreaking effort to encourage communities to read together, centering African American books and authors. It was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month. This initiative has reached more than 6 million participants around the world. (Source: https://ncte.org/get-involved/african-american-read-in/).

The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library has been committed to celebrating this initiative with the community since 2020 where we partner with local authors and organizations.
