Mobile applications

The Library have developed two mobile apps for the iOS and Android platforms, designed to enhance the user experience of our customers. Interested in learning more?

Wi-Fi Hotspots 

This service allows you to checkout a portable device to access high-speed internet anywhere a cell phone signal can be received. Hotspots are checked out for pre-determined time frames, with no renewals. They can be reserved through the Library catalog [search for the keyword "hotspot"] the same way that Library materials are placed on reserve. The Library has a limited number of hotspots available, so reservations will be filled in the order they are made.

• Eligibility:
  • adult age 18+ with valid Charlotte Mecklenburg Library card and current government-issued photo ID.
  • Valid Charlotte Mecklenburg Library card with less than $10.00 in outstanding balance​.
• Loan period: 7 or 14 days. The day after the device is due service will be turned off, the borrower’s library account will be blocked, and a replacement fee of $90.00 fee will be charged. The fee will come off once the device is returned.
• Check-in: equipment can be returned to any Library location but must be returned to a staff member (no book drop returns).
• Borrowing limit: 1 per borrower
• Geographic limitations: Hot Spot devices may only be used in the continental United States.
• Lost/damaged replacement fees:
  • Hotspot device (including all parts: SIM card, battery, battery case): $90.00
  • Case: $10.00
     

Computer classes

The Library offers thousands of free computer classes each year covering a wide range of topics. From the basics of using the Internet and Microsoft Office products to using digital devices like e-readers and tablets. See upcoming classes on our Calendar.

Personalized assistance

Ask about appointments for one-on-one computer help sessions with a technology tutor. Topics covered include but are not limited to Microsoft Office, internet, email, online applications, and help with devices like tablets and e-readers. See upcoming sessions on our Calendar.

Help with online learning

The Library also offers sessions that show you how you can take an online class for free with your library card using Universal Class, Lynda.com, Digital Learn, and Goodwill Community Foundation’s gcflearnfree.com. See upcoming sessions on our Calendar.

Digital inclusion

As a pillar of lifelong learning in our community – our commitment to Digital Inclusion is long term. We plan to continue to build and enhance programs that are able to be sustained and can continually evolve to meet the needs of the community. We will offer multiple options for digital literacy training inside and outside of the library branches.

Internet access

If you have your own device, but just need Internet access, all libraries offer free wireless internet access (Wi-Fi). Learn more about our internet policy and our Wireless Access Network Policy.

Podcast kits

Did you know the Library now lends podcast kits? These kits check out for FREE for three weeks, just like books. Visit our Borrower Policy page for specific details on fees. Podcast kits can be requested and sent to any of our 20 library locations. Look for them in the catalog under "podcast kit."
