Ellen McIntyre is the Dean of the College of Education at UNC Charlotte, the second largest producer of teachers in North Carolina. Prior to becoming dean, Ellen served as Department Chair and Associate Dean at NC State University.
She received her BA in Elementary Education from Northern Kentucky University in 1983 and then taught first, second, and sixth grades in Newport, Kentucky. Ellen obtained her MEd in Reading Education from Northern Kentucky University in 1985 and her Ed.D in Literacy Education from the University of Cincinnati in 1990.
Ellen has been awarded approximately $4 million in grants to support her work and is the author of seven books and numerous research articles. Her current study is funded by the National Science Foundation and focuses on teachers’ development in a STEM-focused elementary teacher preparation program. Ellen has held many leadership roles at the departmental, college, university, state, and national levels.
She lives with her husband Bill, retired from the University of Louisville. In their free time, they enjoy reading, hiking, seeing films, and hanging out with three children and five grandchildren.
