In the last year, more than 1,600 volunteers donated 62,000 hours of their time to support our Library – valued at more than $1.4 million in donated services! The Library accepts gifts of gently used books and materials. These items may be added to our circulating and/or archival collection but most are sold in used book sales to generate funds for the Library. Either way, your gift benefits the Library and is greatly appreciated. Materials such as works of art, office equipment, gaming consoles may be acceptable. The Library cannot accept textbooks, magazines, encyclopedias, or badly damaged items. Not sure if your item qualifies? Call (704) 416-0602.
To donate books or materials, contact your local branch to set up a drop off time. All donations should be bagged or boxed in containers that do not need to be returned to you. A tax receipt will be issued upon request, however you will be responsible for establishing the value of your donation.
The Friends Council, an important component of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Foundation, engages broad community support for the Library through community awareness and fundraising initiatives as part of the Library Foundation’s overall strategic plan. These initiatives provide individuals, corporations and foundations with the opportunity to partner with the Friends Council and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Foundation to raise funds for:
- General library services
- Books and Materials
- Programming for children, teens and adults
- Growing our endowment for future needs

In today’s age of digital access to information, you may ask, "Why do we need libraries?"
The simplest way to answer that question is to visit a Charlotte Mecklenburg Library location. You will find a vibrant, thriving community center, with people from all walks of life coming together to access the Library's many free resources. The Library as a place to simply check out books is a thing of the past. The Library of today and tomorrow is so much more.
The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library contributes to the quality of life in the community, upward mobility and the desirability of the Charlotte market as a place to relocate families and businesses. And it does so at a reasonable price — for every $1 invested, the Library returns $4.57 in direct benefits to the community. (Source: 2010 study conducted by the UNCC Urban Institute)
Last year, Mecklenburg County libraries were visited by individuals over 3.2 million times, and web sites were visited more than 27 million times. More than 1,600 Library volunteers contributed over 62,000 hours of service, the equivalent of 30 full-time positions! In the Library’s 2015 annual customer satisfaction survey, 96% were satisfied or very satisfied with their Library experience.
