Collards + Culture: The LATIBAH Collard Green Museum Exhibit

Collards + Culture: The LATIBAH Collard Green Museum Exhibit

As part of our partnership with the ASC Culture Block program, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is honored to host the LATIBAH Collard Green Museum's The Door of No Return and The Middle Passage exhibits from December 12, 2017-January 24, 2018.

These emotionally moving life size installations explore how Africans were brought to the Americas, enduring the inhumanity of the Middle Passage, and honors their courageous determination. Despite their hardships, their culture is still evident today through their music and food.

Celebrate the grand opening of Collards + Culture

A grand opening celebration will take place December 12 from 4-7 p.m. at Sugar Creek Library. Attendees will enjoy tours of the exhibit, reenactments, dancing, drumming and refreshments.

Tour the exhibit

The exhibit will be open to the public Monday-Thursday from 4-7 p.m., Friday-Saturday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., with special opening hours December 27-28 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Additional tours are available upon request.

The Door of No Return installation is a replica of a section of a dungeon in the lower part of a fort on the west African coast where African men, women and children were confined in chains to be sold and enslaved.

The Middle Passage installation is a sectional replica of the hold of an enslavement ship, and includes associated wall texts and artifacts.
