July Is National Ice Cream Month

July means heat and humidity, but they’re easy to handle when you’ve got ice cream to cool you off--that must be why July is National Ice Cream Month! Let’s celebrate!

On a road trip this summer? See if any of the creameries from Scoop Adventures: The Best Ice Cream of the 50 States, by Lindsay Clendaniel, are on your route. Learn about other ice cream landmarks with Ample Hills Creamery: Secrets and Stories from Brooklyn’s Favorite ice Cream Shop, by Brian Smith, or Scoop: Notes from a Small Ice Cream Shop, by Jeff Miller.

Learn to make your own ice cream treats with our vast cookbook collection, which includes A Passion for Ice Cream, by Emily Luchetti; Cookies & Cream: Hundreds of Ways to Make the Perfect Ice Cream Sandwich, by Tessa Arais; The Art of Making Gelato, by Morgan Monro; and Mexican Ice Cream: Beloved Recipes and Stories, by Fany Gerson. From Freading you can download The Ultimate Guide to Homemade Ice Cream, by Jan Hedh, or author Stef Ferrari’s crazy concoctions in Ice Cream Adventures. I Scream Sandwich! Inspired Recipes for the Ultimate Frozen Treat, by Jennie Schacht, is available in print or to download from Hoopla.

Ebrary offers recipe books for special diets, including Vegan Ice Cream Sandwiches, by Kris Holechek, and Paleo Ice Cream, by Ben Hirshberg. You can find The Vegan Scoop, by Wheeler del Torro, at Hoopla. Our print collection includes the dairy-free cookbook Icy Creamy Healthy Sweet, by Christine Chitnis.

Watch the original master chef Julia Child make ice cream treats by searching “Julia Child ice cream” at Films on Demand. Her ice cream videos include “Assembling the Fettuccine Ice Cream Sandwich” and “Assembling and Serving Ice Cream Profiteroles.”

How about a family storytime as you enjoy the treats of your labors? Check out Splat the Cat in I Scream for Ice Cream, by Rob Scotton; Curious George and the Ice Cream Surprise, by Monica Perez; Ice Cream with Albert Einstein, by Keli Sipperly; or ponder with Elephant and Piggie the moral dilemmas prompted by frozen desserts in Mo Willem’s Should I Share My Ice Cream?

Finally, teens can join us at our West Boulevard branch for Measure Up! Teen Cooking Challenge: Ice Cream in a Bag on Tuesday, July 11 from 2 to 3pm. No cooking skills required! You’ll learn how to read a recipe and watch a demonstration on ice-cream making.

Enjoy your summer, enjoy your ice cream, and don’t forget to log your ice-cream reading and your ice-cream making activities in your Summer Break  account!
