Gear Up for National Bike Month!

The Charlotte area has miles of trails suitable for biking.  The Charlotte Greenway, located throughout Mecklenburg County, offers paved and unpaved trails, depending on your type of bike. The Carolina Thread Trail map lets you click paved or mountain biking trails.  For those with bolder aspirations, head to the U.S. Whitewater Center for mountain biking.  While there is a parking fee, all biking trails are free of charge if you bring your own bike.  Make new friends and train for a race when you visit Weekly Rides, a list of Charlotte-area biking events.

Commute around the Uptown area from two wheels instead of four with a rental from a bike sharing program!  Several companies, such as LimeBike, MoBike, OFO, and B-Cycle, have a presence in the Uptown area, making this an alternative transportation method for consideration. All you have to do is download the company’s app, find and rent a bike, and return the bike to either a docking station or a designated area.

We’ve shared some ideas of where to ride—now, how about something to read?

Make the most of bike puns with titles like Braking for Bodies and Geared for the Grave, Duffy Brown’s biking mysteries set in Mackinac Island.  Follow the trail, literally, of bike cop Ellie Rush in Naomi Hirahara’s Murder on Bamboo Lane and Grave on Grand Avenue.  David Coventry’s The Invisible Mile is based on a true story of a Tour de France underdog team.

Speaking of the Tour de France, learn more about disgraced former champion Lance Armstrong’s fall from grace in Reed Albergotti’s Wheelmen and the DVD The Armstrong Lie.

Keep a copy of the cycling world’s most popular books, Lennard Zinn’s Zinn & the Art of Road Bike Maintenance on hand for routine maintenance issues.   Train smarter, not harder with tips from Joe Friel’s The Cyclist’s Training Bible and Lisa Purcell’s Anatomy, Stretching, and Training for Cyclists.   For the most up-to-date news, gear, and reviews about the cycling industry, Bicycling and Cycling Plus magazines are available anytime digitally via RBDigital

Summer is quickly approaching us!  Load up the bike rack and pack your saddlebags for a biking vacation with these selections.  See the Carolina mountains from a different perspective with Elizabeth Skinner’s Bicycling the Blue Ridge and Nicole Blouin’s Mountain Biking South Carolina.   If you want to travel further than the Carolinas, stream a video of the Best American Biking Treks, while Joshua Cunningham’s Escape by Bike will help you plan for your road trip.

Many of our library branches, including South County and Main Library, have bicycle racks!  CATS, the Charlotte Area Transit System, will also be offering free service through May 12 for any bicyclist.  Don’t forget your helmet!
