Egan, Jennifer(2010) A Visit from the Goon Squad
Egan’s Pulitzer Prize- winning book of interconnected stories revolves around the lives of music producer Bennie Salazar, his former assistant, as well as their friends and family. She chronicles their lives from the 1980s to the present and captures American music, pop culture and political climate of each decade, including New York after 9/11. She does an amazing job of narrating each story from the viewpoint of one character sharing the person’s thoughts, fears, hopes, and idiosyncrasies. Egan uses inventive storytelling techniques including a chapter told through Power Point illustrating how children of the 21st century communicate with their parents. This novel has many layers and it would make a great book club selection.
