Walls, Jeannette(2005) The Glass Castle
If you think your family is dysfunctional wait until you read about Jeannette Walls family in The Glass Castle. Jeannette is the second of four children raised by her drifting, hippie parents all over the country. The family never stays in one place long, the children attend school sporadically at best and their alcoholic father can never keep a job long before "the FBI", or rather the bill collectors, start coming after him and they have to move. Despite the terrible poverty and chaos they grow up in, Jeannette and her siblings all become responsible, normal adults and maintain a relationship with their parents. The Glass Castle is an incredible book that explores the complexities of the unconditional love of a family.
