Reviewer Spotlight
Name: Vickie
Reader’s Club honors Vickie this month. Vickie is a dedicated and prolific reviewer of African American fiction. She is also a member of the Reader’s Club Team. Here is what she has to say about reading and writing reviews:
I became an avid reader thanks to my high school English teacher. Her name was Ms. Mott. I have her to thank for introducing me to some great books. I remember having to read Ethan Frome and How Green Was My Valley and thoroughly enjoying those stories. Presently I focus on keeping abreast of what is being published for the African American audience. This keeps me very busy because of the multitude of titles being published for this particular audience. I am also the facilitator for the monthly adult book club held at the West Boulevard Library. Our book club members are devoted to these monthly sessions. Because of this, I feel a personal obligation to share with them only the best books being published.
Some of my favorite authors are newcomers Danzy Seena, Erica Kennedy and Asha
Bandele. Seena’s latest novel entitled Symptomatic and Kennedy’s Bling tie as my personal favorites this year, Symptomatic because of its storyline and Bling for the clear vision Kennedy was able to depict of her characters.
Since I am a member of a book club I have come to the realization that some books are more conducive to a book discussion than others. The same is true for writing reviews. Once I started writing reviews I developed the ability to identify which books warrant a good book review and which do not. I also feel that it is easier for me to write a review before the book is finished. As I read I am able to identify the element such as characters, pacing and plot that should be included in the review and this makes it easier to write the review when these things are fresh and clear. Sometimes note taking also helps. Another advantage of writing the review while reading the book is that you do not run the risk of divulging too much information. I think a good review is one that makes a person want to read the book. Therefore I try to make the review as alluring as possible in order to draw readers to the book.
Thanks Vickie!
