Order in the Court: Anatomy of a Murder (1959)
Directed by Otto Preminger Starring James Stewart, Lee Remick, Ben Gazzara 160 minutes; B&W; Rated PG-13 Otto Preminger’s courtroom thriller was considered “daring and controversial” when released in 1959. 53 years later, the only thing that’s worn off is the controversy --- the brilliance of ANATOMY OF A MURDER remains indisputable. James Stewart plays a “country lawyer” defending a military officer charged with murder (he shot a man accused of assaulting his wife). Ben Gazzara and Lee Remick play the couple, with real-life attorney Joseph Welch (famous for discrediting Joseph McCarthy) as the judge presiding over the case. The jazz score is by Duke Ellington, who also contributes a cameo.
