What is BookHive?

BookHive is a web site designed for children ages birth through twelve, their parents, teachers or anyone interested in reading about children's books. Providing reader's advisory service, this site contains hundreds of recommended book reviews in a variety of reading levels and interest areas. Parents may find special "parental notes" attached to some reviews that provide additional information about the book. Users can search for books by author, title, reading level, interest area, number of pages, and even favorite illustrator. Catch the latest buzz on books at the BookHive: Your Guide to Children's Literature & Books.

How did BookHive develop?

In January 1999, the Public Library of Charlotte-Mecklenburg County (Charlotte, NC) decided to address the need to have a readers' advisory web site for children written specifically for children, their parents and adults interested in children's books. In March 1999, a team of Children's Librarians, Specialists and Web Page Developers got together to put the concept of a children's readers' advisory tool in motion. A short (but busy) four months later, BookHive evolved and premiered on June 1, 1999.

Where did the name "BookHive" come from?

The children of Mecklenburg County chose the name of the web site through a countywide poll. During the month of April branch libraries put out voting jars and asked children to choose between three possible names for the site. BookHive was the favored choice by the majority of the children's votes.

How are books chosen?

The reviews found in Bookhive are written by the staff of the Public Library of Charlotte-Mecklenburg County and submitted to a team of Children's Librarians for editing and posting. The titles reviewed are staff recommendations from books already in the library's collection. At least twelve new reviews appear each month in the various categories.

How did "Zinger" get his name?

Our mascot, "Zinger" was named by a nine-year-old Charlotte girl who won a nationwide "Name the Bee" contest. Each month, Zinger features new recommendations and highlights found in the Bookhive.
